As a female traveler, you need to choose your travel
destinations carefully because some places are very unsafe for women. This is
very unfair for women because everyone should be able to move freely regardless
of their gender, but it’s the reality. Some of these violent acts against women
are based on traditions and therefore it will take more than legislations to
get rid of them.
So, as a woman, you need to be aware of some of these
traditions and dangers before you embark on your journey. Here are three of the
most dangerous travel destinations for women in the world.
Brazil
Despite of its amazing travel destinations and impressive
cultures that visitors can partake in, Brazil is still one of the most dangerous
place for women to travel to. For a long time, this Latin American country has
been leading in murder cases. It is also one of the leading countries in the
world in terms of violence and crime, especially in the slums.
Statistics show that a woman is sexually attacked every
15 seconds while another one is murdered every 2 hours in Brazil. In addition
to this violence against women, the country also records a very high number of minor
crimes such as muggings, robberies, scams, pickpocketing and stabbings. This is
not to say that Brazil doesn’t have beautiful and peaceful destinations that
women can visit without feeling insecure. Nevertheless, it’s advisable for
women not to travel to any of these places alone.
Egypt
Despite being so rich in culture and history, Egypt
continues to rank highly in terms of violence against women. This is very
regressive considering that the North African country largely depends on
tourism for revenue generation. Since the 2011 political uprising, crime in the
country has continued to rise, especially sexual violence and harassment.
This country has also been flagged severally by the
U.S Department of State as a high-risk area, considering that it hosts a number
of terrorist groups, such as ISIS, that continue to commit deadly attacks almost
on a daily basis. Also, there have been several high-profile cases of foreign
female tourists being sexually assaulted and attacked in the streets. So, if
you are planning to visit the marvelous Egyptian pyramids or any other iconic
site in the country, make sure you are not alone.
India
For a country that is so culturally diverse and full
of wonderful attraction sites, you might think that the government is on top of
things when it comes to protecting tourists, especially women, against attacks
and discrimination. According to Human Rights Watch, the Indian government is
not doing enough to investigate and prosecute sexual abuse cases in the
country.
This Asian country also continues to experience
frequent deadly attacks from terror groups such as Al Badr, Al Umar among
others. Furthermore, there have been many high-profile cases of women being
gang raped in broad daylight. So, if you are considering a trip to the
magnificent Taj Mahal, which is one of the greatest tourist attraction sites in
the world, make sure you are in a group of trustworthy people.
These are just some of the places where women travelers are most likely going to be attacked or abused. There are many other
destinations that are equally dangerous, not just for women but male tourists
too. It is also important to note that this blog doesn’t in any way imply that
the countries listed above approve of this violence.
